How to tune in

From figures to family: how Els Vervaecke redefines leadership

In this ninth episode of The Heels Forward Podcast powered by Montea, host Francesca Vanthielen sits down with Els Vervaecke, CFO of Montea. It’s a candid conversation about leadership, letting go of control, the pressure of high standards – and the surprising lessons life can teach you when you pause and listen.

Growing with Montea

At just 34 years old, Els became CFO of Montea – a listed company that now proudly counts itself among the BEL20. What started as a tandem with CEO Jo De Wolf has grown into a strong finance team of 27, with Els at the helm.

The early years weren’t easy. Outdated systems, a small team, and the ambition to scale fast meant she had to juggle building structure while steering growth. Looking back, she names team culture as her proudest achievement: If one apple in the bowl is bruised, the whole bowl will rot. Finding golden apples – people who are technically strong but also grateful, humble, and honest – that’s the real challenge.”

Leadership beyond the numbers

Els describes herself as a blue profile” in the Insights model: analytical, perfectionist, sometimes insecure when surrounded by more experienced managers. Yet her added value lies elsewhere: in logical thinking, common sense, and above all, empathy.

Over the years, she’s learned that showing vulnerability is not a weakness but a strength. By daring to share, being transparent, and listening to her gut feeling, she has created deeper connections with her team and found sustainable solutions.

A personal turning point

At 40, Els hit what she calls a tipping point. A relationship ended, and she realized she had poured too much of herself into work while neglecting her private life. Supported by coaching, meditation, and reflection, she reconnected with her inner child – and discovered new ways to balance her perfectionism with a more grounded approach.

One moment stands out: waking up next to her godchild, hearing the words Aunt Els, I love you so much.” It sparked questions about motherhood, life choices, and what truly matters. Though she ultimately chose not to become a single mother by choice, Els invests deeply in her role as an aunt to her siblings’ ten children: walking, listening, and making sure they know their voice counts.

Volunteering and giving back

Outside of Montea, Els dedicates time to volunteer work – first at a donkey farm, now at a rehabilitation center in Pulderbos. Swimming and playing with children from zero to 21 has taught her to slow down and to cherish gratitude and humility. I thought I was giving, but in reality, I was getting so much back.”

“With minimal input, maximize the output”

Els’s favorite quote captures her philosophy: less is more. After years of running at full speed, she now knows the importance of efficiency, conscious choices, and respecting human limits – including her own.
